Disaster Services Class Descriptions
Introduction to Disaster Services: The purpose of this video-based course is to provide fundamental information about disasters, how communities respond, and the role of Red Cross Disaster Services. The class must be taken by all new disaster volunteers at the Middletown Area Chapter and is a prerequisite for all disaster classes nation-wide. Family Service: Emergency Assistance to Clients: The purpose of this course is to introduce participants to the Family Services function of disaster relief. Participants will learn the skills and tools needed to conduct an effective client interview. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services Human Resources in Disaster: The purpose of this training is to provide basic information about the activities and processes of the Local Disaster Volunteer, Staffing, and Training functions. Participants will learn how to deliver and support sufficient and effective human resources on a disaster relief operation. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services Mass Care: An Overview: The purpose of this training is to provide basic information about the activities of the Mass Care function. Participants will learn about the skills and abilities needed by Mass Care workers and how they can get started in their local chapter. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services Shelter Operations: The purpose of this course is to prepare Red Cross volunteers in effectively and sensitively managing a shelter. Participants learn how to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of disaster, while working with volunteers in other disaster functions and maintaining order in the shelter.
